Summer School in Environmental Monitoring (UNIPV)

Summer School in Environmental Monitoring (UNIPV)

Date:

29.07.2024 – 02.08.2024 (5 working days)

Venue:

Pavia, Italy

Organizer:

University of Pavia (UNIPV), Italy, under the management of the European Nuclear Experimental Educational Platform (ENEEP) and in cooperation with the European Nuclear Educational Network (ENEN)

Language:

English

Purpose:

This ENEEP school for Environmental Monitoring is intended for people interested in gaining practical experience in the field of environmental impact evaluation and monitoring. The course aims to give a theoretical overview of the main topics and perform exercises using the Facility of the Laboratory of Applied Nuclear Energy (LENA) and the nearby Radiochemistry Laboratory of the Chemistry Department to become familiar with sampling, measurement, and control procedures applied to the environmental monitoring of a research reactor plant. One day will be dedicated to visiting an overview of the Environmental Monitoring system of a site in decommissioning.

Under the supervision of the technical staff students will learn in detail:

  • the drafting of an environmental monitoring plan based on mandatory and specific requirements
  • to get familiar with environmental monitoring procedures and evaluation
  • to Identify procedures for sampling various matrices such as air, soil, and water inside
  • the direct application of the above-mentioned procedures
  • the analysis phase for each different matrices and the evaluation of the results.
  • the differences between normal operation conditions and emergency

The knowledge acquired during the course will provide students with dedicated theoretical lessons and practical experiments to be able to apply what has been learned to other research reactor centers. For a better experience, small student working groups (4-5 max) will be identified and they will alternate in the exercises.

Participants’ qualifications:

The course is aimed at students with bachelor's degrees or following master’s degree programs and early Ph.D.s studying nuclear sciences.
